3 Fall Apple Recipes

Apples are one of the traditional flavors of fall. I love eating them freshly picked from a local apple orchard or baked into warm fall dishes. Earlier today on Indy Style, I demonstrated three recipes featuring some of my favorite varieties of apples from Sage Fruit.

More than 300 varieties of apples are grown in the United States. Seeing so many in the produce department can be a little overwhelming. To help you choose the right apple for your fall recipes, use the spectrum of apple flavors:

Upside Down Apple Cake

Pink Lady apples are the perfect combination of sweet and tart, making them ideal for baking. Try them in this Upside Down Apple Cake. It’s inspired by the traditional Pineapple Upside Down Cake, but this version features all the flavors of fall.

Ingredients
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
One boxed yellow cake mix (and the ingredients required on the box)
2 Pink Lady apples
1/2 lemon

Directions
Step 1 – Prepare the boxed cake mix according to the package directions. Set aside.
Step 2 – In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and brown sugar. Stir together and cook for five to ten minutes. Add cinnamon and vanilla extract. Stir until combined.
Step 3 – Peel and thinly slice the apples. Squeeze the lemon over the sliced apples.
Step 4 – Generously spay a 9-inch round cake pan with baking spray.
Step 5 – Pour the caramel mixture on the bottom of the cake pan.
Step 6 – Place the apple slices in a circular pattern on top of the caramel mixture. Keep the apples in a single layer.
Step 7 – Pour the prepared cake mix on top of the apples. Note that you will not use all of the cake mix. Tap the cake pan on the counter a few times to remove the air bubbles.
Step 8 – Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Let cool slightly. Then remove the cake from the pan by inverting the cake onto a serving plate.

Mummy Apple Turnovers

With Halloween right around the corner, I had to show you these Mummy Turnovers inspired by Kitchen Counter Chronicles. Using several varieties of apples creates a wonderful flavor in this fun dessert that your kids will love!

Mummy Apple Turnovers

Ingredients
1 Honeycrisp apple
1 Pink Lady apple
1 Granny Smith apple
1 tablespoon butter
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 package premade puff pastry
1/2 lemon
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar
2 candy eyes
Shredded coconut

Directions
Step 1 – Roll out the puff pastry into a large rectangle. Cut strips into the sides of the pastry for the mummy’s bandages.
Step 2 – Peel and slice the apples. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the apples, butter, and brown sugar. Cook for five to ten minutes.
Step 3 – Spoon the apple mixture into the center of the puff pastry. Squeeze the lemon over the apple mixture.
Step 4 – Fold the pastry strips over the apple mixture, alternating right and left. Make it messy so it looks like a mummy!
Step 5 – Beat one egg in a small bowl. Brush the top of the pastry with the egg wash. Sprinkle granulated sugar or turbinado sugar on top.
Step 6 – Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool.
Step 7 – Add two candy eyes and sprinkle shredded coconut on top to complete the mummy look!

Boozy Caramel Apple Dippers

Now it’s time for an adult snack! These Boozy Caramel Apple Dippers inspired by Delish are a fun way for us grown-ups to celebrate Halloween!

Boozy Caramel Apple Dippers

Ingredients
3 apples, any variety
2 cups vodka
1 cup caramel sauce
1/2 cup each of chopped nuts, sprinkles, and mini chocolate chips for dipping
Wooden skewers

Directions
Step 1 – Peel and slice the apples. Skewer one slice of apple per skewer.
Step 2 – Fill a wide-mouthed jar with the vodka. Place each skewered apple in the vodka. Refrigerate for at least one hour.
Step 3 – Dip the apple slices in the caramel sauce then top with chopped nuts, sprinkles, or mini chocolate chips.

And don’t throw away the used vodka! Now it’s an apple-infused vodka martini.

Try one of these apple recipes this weekend, and have a great Halloween!
